GEOTHERMICA Calls
Over thirty high-quality transnational projects
GEOTHERMICA – ERA-NET Cofund has already supported fifteen high-quality transnational geothermal energy projects through its first two calls, Call1 and Call2. Funding is shared, with GEOTHERMICA providing about half and the rest from project partners.
These projects cover a wide range of topics, including heat storage, managing induced seismicity, enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) drilling and completion, production operations, composite casing, and integrated geothermal heat applications. Participants come from countries such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Iceland, Ireland, France, Flanders, Denmark, Slovenia, Germany, Spain, the Azores, Portugal, Norway, and the USA.
The first two calls, launched in 2017 and 2019, demonstrated and validated innovative geothermal energy deployment concepts within the broader energy system, bringing solutions closer to commercial deployment with strong industry support.
The Joint Call 2021, backed by GEOTHERMICA and JPP Smart Energy Systems, seeks to further accelerate the heating and cooling transition through technology development, system integration, and innovation. It has a total budget of €32.5 million for projects ready for large-scale implementation by 2030.
The total investment across these projects amounts to nearly €90 million.

Call 1
GEOTHERMICA – ERA-NET Cofund call objective was to support projects with a broad range of topics, such as heat storage, managing induced seismicity, EGS drilling and completion, production operations, composite casing, and integrated applications of geothermal heat.
Call 2
GEOTHERMICA's second call's objective was to launch projects that accelerate the piloting, demonstration and validation of novel concepts of geothermal energy supply within the energy system and to identify paths to commercially viable deployment.
Call 3 with JPP SES
GEOTHERMICA and JPP Smart Energy Systems Joint Call address technology development, system integration, and innovation, emphasising market-driven projects ready for large-scale implementation before 2030.
