Focus Areas

The GEOTHERMICA Initiative, through its focus on these key areas and collaborative efforts, aims to push forward the development of geothermal energy. By engaging public authorities and fostering transnational discussions, the initiative seeks to create a positive impact on the energy landscape of the involved countries, promoting sustainable, secure, and affordable energy solutions.

Collaborative Efforts

GEOTHERMICA Members and Observers focus on several key areas to drive geothermal energy development through transnational collaboration. In SuperHot geothermal systems and Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), members from the USA, Switzerland, and Iceland are actively engaged. They are also involved in risk mitigation processes and the development of policy instruments. In thermal storage, members from Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland support technological advancements.

Additionally, members focus on low-enthalpy geothermal systems to support sustainable energy solutions in cities and regions, with leaders from Iceland, the Netherlands, and Germany. Potential collaborations include working with the International Energy Agency (IEA) on thermal storage and the International Partnership for Geothermal Technology (IPGT) on geothermal projects.

SuperHot & EGS

GEOTHERMICA Members actively support developments focusing on superhot geothermal systems and Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). We have leaders from the USA, Switzerland, and Iceland.

Risk Mitigation & Policy Instruments

GEOTHERMICA Members are actively engaged in risk mitigation processes and are assisting in developing policy instruments. Here, we have leaders from Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Thermal Storage

GEOTHERMICA Members actively support developments in focus of thermal storage. Here, we have leaders from Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Also collaborating with IEA.

Cities and Regions

GEOTHERMICA Members actively support developments in cities and regions, particularly in low-enthalpy geothermal systems. Here, we have leaders from Iceland, the Netherlands, and Germany.
